M/V Safe/Sea Block Island

The Safe/Sea Block Island was built for Safe/Sea over the winter of 2003-2004 by Almar Boats of Tacoma, Washington. She entered service as our primary offshore responder in the summer of 2004, based out of Block Island's New Harbor. Her hull is welded aluminum, with a 26" diameter inflation collar. Based at Block Island Boat Basin from mid-June through Labor Day, the M/V Safe/Sea Block Island is now Safe/Sea's primary responder for Block Island Sound, including the waters south of Block Island to 25 nautical miles offshore.

The Safe/Sea Block Island is powered by twin Yanmar 6LY series turbodiesels that produce 315 horsepower each. Each engine is coupled to a Hamilton 274 waterjet through Borg-Warner 1:1 marine transmissions. In the hands of an experienced operator, her waterjet propulsion system gives the Safe/Sea Block Island amazing manueverability. She can spin 360 degrees without moving forward or astern and can even move directly sideways or diagonally while maintaining her heading.

The Safe/Sea Block Island carries a full suite of electronic navigational and communications equipment, including a Furuno radar, Northstar DGPS chart plotter, Datamarine SEA156 VHF radios, and a 360 degree, infrared capable digital video recording system.

This is a video of Capt. Doug Gould, aboard the Safe/Sea Block Island, showing just how capable these twin waterjet vessels are.  This video shows the Safe/Sea Block Island in the tight confines of the finger piers of the Block Island Boat Basin

Capt. Doug Gould is on his own... for now.
Other boaters start answering Capt. Gould's call for more fire extinguishers.
The entire harbor community has mobilized, and the fire is under control. Panama Red is a bit low in the water from their efforts.
The BIFD arrives aboard the marine patrol boat to ensure the fire is truly snuffed.
